CHEMetrics offers an Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) test kit employing the well-known Permanganate reagent to deliver sensitivity and accuracy within two minutes or less. Based on CHEMetrics patented Self-Filling Reagent Ampoule technology. Premixed. Premeasured. Precise. Each kit contains 30 tests.
Permanganate Method
CHEMetrics employs a titrimetric chemistry in which MBT is titrated with potassium permanganate in an acidic medium. No additional end point indicator is required. A colour change from pink to straw yellow signals the end of the titration. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/l) MBT.

Applications
Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) has a number of uses including corrosion inhibitor for copper and copper alloys, corrosion inhibitor in oil-based fluids, vulcanisation agent for rubber, polymerisation inhibitor, biocide, preservative in adhesives and electroplating brightener.
Testing for MBT is essential for protecting copper and copper alloys from corrosion and deterioration in closed-loop cooling systems, boilers, and other similar equipment. It is frequently formulated with various other water treatment products. However, excessive MBT can lead to issues such as scaling and chemical imbalances. Regular testing helps maintain proper dosing concentration to ensure system stability. Elevated MBT levels can negatively impact the performance and longevity of closed-loop cooling systems and utility condensers, leading to increased maintenance and downtime. In many industries, monitoring chemical usage is a requirement to meet safety and environmental regulations. Routine MBT testing supports compliance with these standards. Additionally, a sudden drop in MBT levels may indicate leaks, dilution, or contamination. Consistent monitoring allows for early detection and corrective action – helping to prevent costly system failures. This Titrets test kit is particularly well suited to the monitoring of closed-loop cooling water systems and utility condensers where high MBT concentrations are usually maintained.
What is Mercaptobenzothiazole?
Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) is an organic compound classified as a sulphur-containing heterocycle. It has the chemical formula C6H4(NH)SC=S or more simply C7H5NS2. It typically appears as a pale yellow to tan crystalline powder. It has a planar molecular structure with a C=S double bond. It is manufactured industrially using the Kelly process, whereby aniline, carbon disulphide and sulphur react at elevated temperature and pressure. An insoluble compound, it dissolves with the addition of a base, such as sodium hydroxide. When it comes into contact with Copper, it binds with the copper atoms with its S- and N- atoms, forming a stable, water-insoluble, protective Copper-MBT complex which inhibits the formation of copper oxide. It is therefore an effective corrosion inhibitor on metallic surfaces. It is most often used in an alkaline solution for best long-term passivation performance. MBT may be carcinogenic to humans and is highly toxic to aquatic life. It is resistant to standard biodegradation processes and can accumulate in industrial wastewater.
