Instrumental Colorimetric Analysis

The determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is widely used in municipal and industrial laboratories to measure the overall level of organic contamination in waste water. The contamination level is determined by measuring the amount of oxidant required to oxidize the organic matter in the sample. This is equivalent to amount of oxgyen used up by the contaminated water during natural decay. CHEMetrics offers two types of vial for the determination of COD in waste water, USEPA Approved and Mercury Free.

To perform the test, the analyst simply removes the Teflon-lined cap from the vial, adds the sample to the vial, and replaces the cap. The vial is then heated for 2 hours at 150C in a standard digestor block. Once digestion is complete, the reading is obtained photometrically. Our COD vials can be used with our either our two dedicated COD photometers, the V-2000 Multi-Analyte Photometer, or with any instrument that accepts 16 mm sample cells. Contact us to confirm compatibility if you already possess a spectrophotometer, photometer or colorimeter. The COD Photometer and V-2000 are depicted below.

We also offer a disposal service. Details are available upon request.
